The Efficacy and Wounding Potential of 9mm Projectiles Tested in the Near Human Porcine Model

A 2026 research article from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus compared four 9mm projectiles in a near-human porcine anatomical model constructed with skin, muscle, an intact humerus, ribs and lung tissue. Fired from a 4.2-inch pistol at five yards, the test examined how three conventional jacketed hollow-point duty loads and the G9 Defense 9mm +P 80-grain solid-copper fluted projectile performed after striking cylindrical bone before entering a simulated thoracic cavity.

The authors reported that the G9 projectile shattered the humerus without fragmenting, traveled through the shoulder and into the chest model while remaining virtually intact. It produced the largest measured permanent wound channel in muscle at 10 cm2 and the deepest penetration in the comparison. The study highlights why anatomical ballistic testing can provide useful information beyond conventional 10% ballistic gelatin when evaluating 9mm terminal performance, projectile integrity and penetration after bone.
